Despite Mercks recent insistence that the potentially dangerous or even deadly side effects associated with its controversial painkiller, Vioxx, only occur after 18 months of taking the drug, recent data received by the Food and Drugs Administration suggests that the heightened risk of heart attacks and strokes could come after as little as four months upon starting to take the painkiller.
According to the Wall Street Journal, an investigation into the drug showed that the higher risk of these dangerous or fatal side effects could come after a far shorter period than originally claimed by the manufacturer of the drug, pharmaceutical giant Merck.
The Wall Street Journal claims that data revealed that Vioxx showed the dangers started after just four months when studied in comparison to a placebo. Merck on the other hand has been insisting at recent court trials that there is no danger for those taking the drug for under 14 months.
Merck is still facing thousands of lawsuits from users of Vioxx that experienced dangerous side effects as a result of taking the medication, as well as from family of those fatally injured as a result of taking the medication.
