A study involving the evaluation of data and statistics relating to pharmacy robberies has indicated that this type of crime is on the rise, and that prescription drugs such as Oxycontin are the reason for the sharp increase in this type of robbery rather than cash. It seems that those targeting pharmacies for robberies are looking for prescription drugs that have a street value and are popular among drug abusers, such as the opium based painkiller Oxycontin.
The data was evaluated by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, and data from the Drug Enforcement Administration was used in order to carry out the study. Figures from the year 2000 to 2003 showed that there were on average around eight pharmacy robberies per day with a total figure of over eleven thousand.
Officials have stated that Oxycontin has become one of the main targets for pharmacy robbers, and this is because there is a huge demand for it and it can get a good price on the streets. One pharmacy owner said she had been robbed twice last year, and for the robbers it was well worth getting the drug even if it was just one bottle.
She said: "They can get a dollar a milligram on the streets. They're not thinking of anything beyond getting the drugs, so they don't care at that point if they kill somebody."
