The Food and Drugs Administration recently announced that it has given approval to a new bone marrow disease drug. The injectable drug is known as Dacogen, although it is also known as decitabine. It will offer another treatment option for those with myelodysplastic syndromes.
This type of syndrome is that where the bone marrow fails to produce adequate mature blood cells. Between 7,000 and 12,000 people are diagnosed with this type of condition each year, with the elderly being the worst affected.
Several clinical trials were carried out using this drug prior to FDA approval, and with each one it was found that around 20% of patients using the drug showed partial or full responses. The drug is thought to promote normal development of blood cells.
The drug is also known to have a number of side effects, including low white blood cell counts, low platelets in blood, anemia, fatigue, nausea, fever, constipation, high blood sugar, and coughing. There are a number of other side effects that are related to the use of this drug.
