A new study has concluded that the controversial cox 2 inhibitor drug Vioxx could cause heart attacks within the first couple of weeks of use. Vioxx is a painkilling anti-inflammatory drug that has been at the center of much controversy and many lawsuits after it was discovered that the side effects of the drug could and have been serious and even fatal.
The latest study was carried out at Queens University. One of the researchers on the project stated that around 25% of Vioxx users who suffered heart attacks did so within a couple of weeks of starting the drug treatment. She stated: "This demonstrates that cardiovascular risks from taking Vioxx may occur much earlier than previously believed."
The Canadian Medical Association Journal recently published the findings of the study. One of the researchers on the project added: "Our previous study on COX-2 inhibitors, which included Vioxx and Celebrex, evaluated whether there was an increased risk of heart attack while taking these medications; the answer was yes for Vioxx."
In the study the pattern relating to risk of heart attacks was assessed over a three year period. The study concluded that the risk actually decreased with time, and that those at highest risk were new users of the drug.
