A recent report, which was released by a national consumer advocacy group, has stated that drug manufacturers try and downplay the risk of medications as well as promoting unproven uses and exaggerating claims when marketing the medication to users as well as doctors. This false marketing is done in a number of ways, stated the group.
The group went on to say that the misleading information given by drug manufacturers was provided through television, in print, and verbally by representatives of the companies. Furthermore, the report went on to state, the Food and Drugs Administration had been ineffective in dealing with the provision of false information to doctors and consumers by the drug manufacturers.
The author of the report stated: "Drug marketers are pushing drugs in deceptive ways that put the public at risk. Vioxx may be the poster child, but our report shows the problem is pervasive throughout the industry. This is not a matter of a single bad apple - 85 companies received letters from the FDA."
However, a spokesperson for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America stated that the report "grossly misleads the public about the safety of America's drug system and the goals, practices and results of prescription pharmaceutical marketing and advertising."
