The Food and Drugs Administration has warned that an antihistamine has been linked to a number of deaths in children aged 2 and under. Seven cases of death have already been linked to the use of promethazine hydrochloride, according to the FDA, and a number of other reports have been received relating to severe breathing problems in users of the same age.
The drug is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Wyeth, and is known as Promethazine HCI, and sold under the brand name of Phenergan. There are also a number of generic versions of the drug, and the FDA has warned that the dangers apply to all forms of the antihistamine and medications that contain the antihistamine.
The Food and Drugs Administration has confirmed that the warning labels on the drug have been updated to reflect the potential dangers. The agency has warned both parents and doctors to avoid giving the drug to those aged two and under.
Doctors and patients have also been warned to exercise caution when it comes to prescribing this antihistamine or any medications containing it to children of any age.
