Substitute Teacher Took Oxycontin With Students

Added May 13th, 2005

A Bay County School District substitute teacher has been released on a $10,500 bond after being charged with drug abuse with two of her students at the Bozeman Learning Center in Sand Hills. Jeaneen Tyndall, age 26, had smoked pot with two students, ages 15 and 16, before leaving the campus with them in order to abuse Oxycontin pills.

The teacher has been ordered to stay away from both the campus and all students from the center, and some Bay County officials have stated that the incident has brought to light the necessity to perform drugs tests on prospective staff as part of the screening procedure.

One official stated, "We do not do random drug screening for teachers or substitutes, only bus drivers. I think drug screening would be a valuable tool. It would be another screening process. When a substitute goes into the classroom, they are the teacher of record. They're expected to abide by the same code of ethics as teachers do."

Oxycontin, one of the drugs that the substitute teacher abused with her students, contains an opium derivative and therefore gives abusers a high. Studies have revealed that this drug is already being abused by a worrying number of juveniles, who find it easy to get hold of.
