Over 20 patient advocacy groups have approached the Food and Drugs Administration asking the agency to place a ban on promotions on medications, as more and more drug manufacturers try and beat the competition through special offers and promotions on their medications, such as money off, buy one get one free offers, coupons, free trial offers, and more.
Drug manufacturers and officials have stated that the special offers benefit patients in many ways, such as enabling them to try the benefits of various medications in order to compare them but without having to cope with unmanageable costs due to the special prices and promotions available. Drug company officials state that these offers also go some way towards improving interaction between patients and doctors.
However, patient advocacy groups and various members of the medical community have expressed concerns, stating that the offers could make a difference to the way doctors prescribe. There has been particular concern expressed over the special offers that have come up on childrens medications.
Concerns over the promotions have also been expressed by FDA officials. In a statement, regulators said that prescription drugs promoted with coupons or free trial offers may be seen as more widely indicated, more appropriate, and/or less risky than they really are.
