A Utah doctor has been accused of being involved in a drug ring with gang ties, and has been accused of writing prescriptions for Oxycontin as part of the drug ring. Among the charges against Dr. Alexander Theodore were ongoing criminal enterprises, crimes against the United States, conspiracy to distribute drugs and drug distribution.
Dr. Theodore treated patients as a physician at the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center, and this was under a contract with the University of Utah College of Nursing. However, this was not where the prescriptions were written according to reports. It is claimed that the doctor was charging $400 to $500 per office visit and providing Oxycontin.
Recruiters were used to find people who had insurance to cover the cost of the medication before an appointment was set up. In return for paying the doctors fee the recruiter was then given around three quarters of the Oxycontin according to reports.
Nearly 250 were involved in the drugs ring. Joe Christensen, director of the State Insurance Department's Insurance Fraud Division stated: It's huge. Absolutely huge... The more we looked into it, the more it grew.
