A new national report released recently has indicated that teens are continuing to abuse prescription medications such as Oxycontin in a bid to get a high, and the report estimates that around 20% of teenagers have tried to get high on prescription medication, with many of them doing it right under their parents noses and still not being caught.
Reports allege that teenagers are now abusing prescription medications more than drugs such as crack, cocaine, ecstasy and methemphetamines. This includes cough medicines as well as strong painkillers and other prescription drugs. The figures and data confirm the concerns that most state officials already have relating to the rising abuse of prescription medications among younger people.
Almost a third of teenagers that were interviewed stated that they did not even think that prescription medication was addictive, and many thought that taking prescription medication in order to get a high was far safer than taking illegal drugs
One official spoke of the rise in the abuse of prescription medications among young adults, stating: "Some of them are being given to them by their parents or they are stealing them out of the cabinets. Sometimes, the parents will take them to the doctors and the doctors are prescribing them to the children."
