Researchers at Yale University have issued results of a study that suggests there could be a strong link based on genetics when it comes to dependency on drugs such as Oxycontin and other narcotic based drugs. The study involved nearly 400 families, and it is hoped that the results could eventually provide additional protection for those at increased risk of developing drug dependency.
One of the researchers stated: "These results provide a first basis to identify genes for opioid dependence from a genome-wide investigation. Research in the laboratory now is focused on finding specific genes that modify risk for opioid dependence."
Researchers state that there are also environmental factors involved in a persons likelihood to develop a drug dependency on narcotics and drugs such as Morphine and Oxycontin, and that a combination of understanding the environmental factors along with the genetic link could play a big part in helping people in the future.
The researcher stated: "Once specific genes that increase or decrease risk are known, we will be in a better position to figure out exactly what the environmental factors might be and, perhaps, how they can be modified to protect people who are genetically at risk."
