Findings On Cox-2 Drug Problems Could Lead To New Breed Of Painkiller

Following extensive studies and research, experts have stated that they are on their way to understanding why controversial cox-2 inhibitors such as Vioxx and Bextra can increase the risk of heart problems. The experts also stated that the data collected from these studies could help to create a new breed of painkiller than could actually reduce cox-2 cardiovascular problems.

The problems with the traditional cox-2 drugs have been identified by researchers at Queen's University and the University of Pennsylvania. The Journal of Clinical Investigation has published the results of the study. Researchers state that the cox-2 inhibitors were causing the increased risk to the heart via the same mechanism that they reduced pain and inflammation in the body.

The research into the causes of heart problems from cox-2 drugs was actually carried out using mice rather than humans, but researchers from the universities state that the results still lead them to believe that a new, improved type of painkiller could result from the findings.

One doctor stated: "Selective inhibitors of mPGES-1 may retain much of the benefit of drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, while diminishing the risk of heart attack and stroke by having precisely the opposite effect on prostacyclin…"
