The recent controversy and withdrawal of a number of hugely popular and heavily prescribed painkillers has led to many patients looking for alternative sources of pain relief through fear that even medications not under fire may run the risk of serious or deadly effects. Many patients are frightened to turn to alternative drugs following the controversy over painkillers such as Bextra, Vioxx, and Celebrex, and are nervous that in years to come even these safer drugs will prove to have some sort of deadly effect.
Because of this, some patients are turning to alternative methods of pain relief. Holistic medication and homeopathy have become popular options for those looking for relief from pain, and many are turning to procedures such as reflexology, acupuncture, and in some cases even hypnosis. Some are even turning to alcohol, taking a sip of liquor or even beer in the event that the pain flares up. One patient stated: "If you have a headache, you take a sip of beer. If your knees hurt, you drink some beer. If nothing else, it'll help you sleep."
Other people that were previously taking the controversial painkillers are turning to home remedies, relying on everything from creams and lotions to drinks in order to try and relieve pain. Others are looking towards health and herbal supplements, but even these are posing a worry. The major concern for medical professionals is that some patients may be too frightened to take anything, and my simply be putting up with the pain.
The FDA has also come under fire, and whereas it was once accused of being too slow to approve much-needed drugs, it has now been accused of being too rash with its decisions, and approving drugs without giving them proper consideration.
