Three doctors from Myrtle Beach have had their sentences reduced by a federal judge after being charged with the illegal prescribing of narcotics and painkillers. The three doctors, who worked for the Comprehensive Care and Pain Management Center, located in Myrtle Beach, were prosecuted and originally handed down very harsh sentences.
Michael Jackson, the first of the three doctors, originally received a sentence of 24 years, and this was reduced to just two and a half years. The second doctor, Ricardo Alerre, was originally sentenced to 19 years, and this was reduced to two years. The third doctor, Deborah Bordeaux, originally received a sentence of eight years, and this was reduced to two years also.
Painkillers that were illegally prescribed by the three doctors including the powerful opium-based painkiller Oxycontin, which is known for being heavily abused because of its ability to give users a high. The same judge had handed down the original sentences but a federal appeals court ruled that more discretion should have been used by the judge originally in relation to sentencing guidelines.
The original prosecutor stated: "These three doctors just got lucky." The attorney that represented the three doctors when they appealed against the original sentences says he still intends to ask for a review of the doctors convictions.
