Data has indicated that drug companies have toned down on consumer advertising for drugs recently, with spending on advertising campaigns having decreased as well as advertisements being more straightforward and less glossy following new guidelines, which came into force last summer.
The recent controversy surrounding drugs such as Bextra and Vioxx has sparked fresh concern over glossy advertising that make drugs appear wonderful without making any mention of the potential dangers and side effects.
Last year two days of public hearings were held by the FDA with regards to drug advertising and comments have since been reviewed. This could stem in further new regulations, although the FDA has stated it is too early to determine whether there will be any further changes.
However, one lawyer who represents drug companies thinks that the public hearing marks an imminent change in regulations. He stated: "Whenever there is a public hearing, it is a sign that change is coming."
