ADHD Drugs Require Stronger Warnings

Added March 24th, 2006

The Food and Drugs Administration has stated that far stronger warnings are required for ADHD drugs after reports that children that have been taking the medications have been experiencing hallucinations. It has been reported that the hallucinations experienced by the children often involve snakes and insects.

Black box warnings, which are the strongest warning labels available for drugs, were rejected by a panel after the psychiatrists and medics stated that the drugs were crucial in the treatment of ADHD in children. However, the drugs have been under closer scrutiny lately.

Another FDA panel has made recommendations that black box warnings should be added to the drugs because of he increased risk of heart problems , caused by raised blood pressure from the stimulant drugs. Paediatric committee members stated that children with heart problems should not take the medication, and that this type of strong warning was not required for children because of their reduced risk of heart problems.

The FDA now has to make a decision based on recommendation from the two committees, one of which wants black box warnings and the other that claims that they are not needed.
