In one of the latest of many criminal incidents involving the powerful opium based painkiller Oxycontin, police have busted a drug ring involving the painkiller. The pills were being sold on the streets of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and Dania Beach police officials made their bust earlier this week after a brief investigation.
A pharmacist called police after becoming suspicious when a woman came into the Hallandale Beach pharmacy in order to get a prescription for Oxycontin filled. Police then arrived at the pharmacy and arrested the woman, 36-year-old Lashawn Hankerson.
Hankerson then reportedly provided the police with additional information following questioning, and four further arrests were made. Police state than among those arrested was the leader of the ring, members of which had been going into pharmacies to get prescriptions filled and then selling the pills on the street.
Prescription medication abuse has become one of the major killers on the streets among drugs, and Oxycontin has become the cause of particular concern in states all over America due to the high level of abuse.
