The weight loss drug Meridia has been at the center of controversy due to potentially dangerous side effects that have been linked to the following studies. Increased blood pressure and heart rate are a couple of the problems that have been linked to the drug. This drug is another of the drugs that have been approved by the FDA over recent years only to become shrouded in controversy when dangerous side effects come to light.
The FDA has stated that Meridia is a safe drug providing it is taken as advised on the label or by a physician. However, despite standing by that statement, the FDA is also thought to be issuing an advisory that could see the introduction of updated prescription guidelines, stiffer warnings, or even restricted use.
This move is welcomed by many, such as consumers agencies that have been lobbying for more stringent monitoring of drugs before approval, although for many others it is too little too late. One consumer group spokeswoman stated: It is long overdue for the FDA to at least warn consumers about the risks of Meridia.
This drug was approved around seven years ago, and several years after approval the FDA was petitioned by consumer groups to have the drug withdrawn due to side effects and links to many deaths. The FDA stated at that time that the drug was safe, and has allegedly reiterated this. However, for some people the FDAs decision to issue an advisory casts doubt on just how safe the agency deems this drug to be.
