Ativan Students Hospitalized

Added March 22nd, 2005

A group of young teenage students at Clippert Multicultural Magnet Academy, southwest Detroit, have been hospitalized after a 13-year-old brought his Ativan pills to the school and shared them with his friends. The pills are thought to have been distributed to 11 students. Ativan is a drug that is prescribed for anxiety, seizures, and insomnia. It has also been linked to a range of dangerous side effects in the past.

School officials called 911 when the students that had taken the drugs began to get very drowsy. Officials were not aware of what had happened until one boy admitted that another student had been distributing the drug. They were also unaware of exactly how much of the drug each of the affected students had taken. A spokesman for the school, speaking about one boy that fell out of his chair because of the drowsiness, stated: "Initially, the teacher thought he was playing around."

The affected children were taken to Children's and Detroit Receiving hospitals. It turned out that the student that had brought the drugs into school had been prescribed them by his doctor. He had not been selling the drugs at the school, but had simply shared them with some of his friends, and this had resulted in the drowsiness and side effects.

The school principle also devised and sent a letter to the parents of all the school’s children. Part of the letter read: "The EMS technicians and I met with students to let them know the dangers of taking drugs prescribed for others. Continue to tell your child the importance of taking only those drugs prescribed for them by their doctor and given to them by their parents."
