During the New Jersey trial against pharmaceutical giant Merck, taking place in Atlantic City, a scientist working for Merck defended the company to the jury claiming that it only appeared that Vioxx caused an increased risk of heart attacks in a study because the other medication used in the study, Naproxen, offered heart protecting properties.
The scientist, Briggs Morrison, claimed that the results of the study results published in the year 2000 were not an indication that Vioxx increased the risk of heart attacks. The study in question involved around 8,000 patients.
Morrison stated: "The assumption was that Vioxx was neutral for cardiovascular events." He also stated that the reason that the results showed an increase in heart attacks for Vioxx patients "is because NSAIDs were cardio-protective, not because Vioxx was harmful."
Since the potential increased risks came to light, Merck voluntarily withdrew its drug from the market, and has now been hit with thousands of lawsuits from those claiming injury or wrongful death of loved ones.
