Prempro Risk Of Incontinence

Added March 18th, 2005

Prempro is a drug that comes under the umbrella of a group of drugs known as progestins. This drug is usually prescribed to female patients that need hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Also known as Premarin, this drug is taken by several million women in the United States on a daily basis. Not all women have to take HRT, as menopause does not affect all women in the same way. However, many women suffer badly from the menopause, making it vital to take an HRT treatment.

Some of the symptoms and side effects of taking Prempro have been identified as hot flashes and sweating; vaginal atrophy, which makes intercourse painful; irregular periods, which can be heavy, can cease altogether, or be erratic; night sweats and sleeping problems; and mood swings. However the latest reports show that this drug may also increase the chances of incontinence in women that are or have been taking Prempro.

The drug, which is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant, Wyeth, based in Madison, has been the topic of controversy recently following studies that showed that the drug increased the risk of heart attacks, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer. According to a national study, which was in the American Medical Association Journal in February, in comparison to placebos, this drug also showed that there was a significantly higher risk of women developing incontinence.
