Courthouse Evacuated During Vioxx Trial

Added March 17th, 2006

In one of the latest trials against Merck over its controversial painkiller Vioxx, the courthouse had to be evacuated midway through the proceedings after a device was discovered, suspected to be a bomb. The nature and high profile of the cases against Merck made the move to evacuate and take precautions crucial according to officials.

The device caused a bomb scare but was actually a piece of equipment used by police in training in bomb detection. The court in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was evacuated just after eight o’clock in the morning on Wednesday. Police, fire crews, and bomb experts were called in as around 100 people were evacuated from the building.

The piece of equipment, which was said to have been left behind after a training exercise, was quickly removed and people were allowed back into the court within a couple of hours of the evacuation.

Vioxx was withdrawn from the market in 2004, and thousands of cases have been filed against the manufacturer of the drug, Merck, after it was found that the painkiller could increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and related fatalities.
