Crestor is a drug that comes under the umbrella of statins and is prescribed for cholesterol reduction. Manufactured by a drug company called AstraZeneca, the drug was said to decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, and increase HDL cholesterol levels, which is the good cholesterol. This drug is prescribed in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. Crestor was initially approved by the FDA in August 2003.
This drug has already been linked to a number of dangerous side effects, including kidney failure and the muscle-destroying disease, rhabdomyolysis. The FDA has now issued warnings that show that Crestor could pose a greater risk of muscle injury to Asians than to others, and the labeling on Crestor has been revised to reflect this. The manufacturers of Crestor, AstraZeneca, have advised lower initial doses for some patients, and have included special dosage instructions for Asian Americans.
Although this was one of the drugs that has been the topic of hot controversy recently, because of the potentially deadly side effects of the drug revealed in studies, the FDA has stated that it "believes that potential benefits of statin drugs when used as labeled and indicated for the treatment of elevated cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) outweigh their potential risks and provide an important treatment option for millions of Americans at risk of heart disease."
