A nationwide poll has indicated that a huge number of Americans have abandoned the use of Cox-2 drugs such as Bextra and Vioxx following last years controversy over the side effects and potentially deadly harm caused by these drugs. Cox-2 inhibitors have been widely prescribed and relied on by millions of people over the years. These drugs were hailed miracles and welcomed by patients and medics alike, because of their ability to act like a standard non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) without causing the gastric problems commonly linked to standard NSAIDs.
However, recent studies have shown that these drugs are linked to dangerous side effects such as heart problems, strokes, and skin diseases. Although the drugs have been given the go-ahead to remain on the market subject to stricter labelling and warnings by the manufacturers, the latest poll has shown that nearly two-thirds of the patients that were previously taking cox-2 medications have decided not to continue with this line of treatment. On the other end of the spectrum, there are those that have insisted all along that the FDA should allow them to make their own decisions regarding which painkillers they take, despite the risks.
A Washington doctor spoke about the results of the poll, stating: "This poll illustrates the high level of concern among patients about the potential side effects of Cox-2 inhibitors. And the side effects can't be ignored - studies show a significantly increased risk of heart attack and stroke, especially for those patients who are elderly or who have taken the drugs for long periods of time. Bextra also potentially carries the risk of blood clots and a serious skin reaction.
