A government official has confirmed that President Bush will be nominating the urology surgeon Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach for the post of commissioner at the Food and Drugs Administration. Eschenbach has been acting commissioner at the agency since last September, and the president will be nominating him for the permanent position.
Since Bush entered office back in 2001 two commissioners have already come and gone at the agency, and this would make Eschenbach the third FDA commissioner in five years. The last commissioner resigned last year just two months after his post was confirmed.
The nomination will have to be confirmed through the senate, and lawmakers are likely to use the opportunity to highlight their concerns about the agency.
Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., said: "For the majority of President Bush's time in office the FDA has been without a permanent commissioner, which has adversely affected the agency's ability to protect the American people from dangerous drugs. While I am pleased to see the president take the step toward having a full-time commissioner, we need to learn a lot more from Dr. von Eschenbach about what kind of relationship he envisions the FDA having with the drug industry.”
