Schwarzenegger Takes A Stand For Supplements

Added March 14th, 2005

Following last year’s ban on Ephedra, a weight loss supplement that has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, and deaths, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated that the FDA should steer clear of trying to enforce regulations on supplements. He has drawn a distinct line between steroids and supplements, stating that steroids are a different matter altogether but that supplements should not be put in the same category.

"To go and include among steroids food supplements, the performance-enhancing food supplements, it's ludicrous to forbid this for a student to take," he said. "If you take a protein food supplement that is made out of milk protein, out of milk, or out of soybean, or out of liver or fish that has maybe 90 percent protein, they will enhance your performance, because that's what you need in order to get strong, is protein. Why would that be outlawed?"

However, many are critical that Schwarzenegger has a conflict of interest, in that he has admitted to using supplements throughout his career and also has ties to at least two bodybuilding glossies that get money from high profile advertising for supplements. It has been reported that Schwarzenegger was named executive editor of two muscle magazines, and that his Council on Physical Fitness receives a quarter of a million dollar donation from each magazine every year in return for this.

One fitness model echoed Schwarzenegger’s views on the FDA getting involved in supplements. She stated: "I have a real problem with the FDA getting involved. It's my body, it's my choice. I want to use what I want to use."
