Cardiologist States Vioxx Can Cause Damage Even In Short Term Use

Added March 10th, 2006

A cardiologist has testified at a Vioxx trial and stated that the drug can cause damage even when used in the short term. Speaking at the trial in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the cardiologist claimed that even taking Vioxx in the short term can increase the risks of heart attacks.

Merck, the pharmaceutical giant that manufactures Vioxx, had been stating in its defense that using Vioxx for under 18 months did not pose a health risk.

Dr. Harlan Krumholz stated that patients did not need to have taken the painkiller, Vioxx, for over 18 months in order to be at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. He stated: "It's associated with risk and I do not believe that risk is time-dependent."

The doctor spent nearly three days testifying as a $500 per hour expert. An expert in cardiology and epidemiology, he was testifying on behalf of 59-year-old Thomas Cona, a plaintiff in one of the cases.
