A company in Oakmont has been quizzed by the Food and Drug Administration after the seizure of $13,500 worth of supplements containing the banned ingredient Ephedra. The federal marshals that seized the supplements confirmed that they contained the banned weight loss drug or were mislabelled.
The sales manger for ATF Fitness, the company in question, states that the supplements were being sold to a customer that is in Poland, where there is no ban on Ephedra. The manager went on to add that there was not enough time to get rid of all Ephedra stocks when the ban was imposed last year, and therefore some stocks were still available at the factory. "We were just trying to get rid of the product that we had leftover to foreign accounts," said the manager. "I had a purchase order for the product and payment. I showed it was going to Poland, and they asked me to hold on to it.”
The supplements were discovered accidentally when FDA officials visited the AFT Fitness site on completely unrelated business. The agency has since run some tests, and has confirmed that some of the supplements did not appear to contain Ephedra, and therefore in some cases the packaging was mislabeled.
The sales manager was unable to explain the results of these tests, simply stating: "That product was all made by another manufacturer. We put a label on it, and then we sold it."
