Consumer Group Wants FDA To Ban Darvon Products

Added March 8th, 2006

The consumer protection group Public Citizen has petitioned the Food and Drugs Administration in a bid to get a ban placed on Darvon products. The group wants the FDA to place an immediate ban on the products due to its links with over 2,000 accidental deaths. The group also claims that the drug is very addictive yet offers no greater benefits than many alternatives.

Data that came from the Federal Drug Abuse Warning Network claims that over five percent of all drug related deaths are related to this drug and its related products. Around 23 million prescriptions were filled for propoxyphene in 2004, making it a hugely popular drug.

It is claimed that the reason the drug can prove so dangerous is because of the way that it converts into a metabolite, which then proves toxic to the heart and can cause cardiac depression. Some of the effects of the drug can include irregularities in the contraction of the heart and slowed heartbeats.

The petition filed by the group stated: “The number of deaths involving propoxyphene in the US alone is striking.” The British government already announced that the drug would be phased out last year after stating that there was no significant benefit that outweighed the risks.
