Following the scandal relating to cox-2 inhibitors over the past six or seven months, it has been revealed that many cox-2 users are determined to continue using drugs such as Vioxx, Bextra, and Celebrex, despite the warnings and the restricted access placed on these drugs by the FDA. All three drugs have now been approved for sale again; however, doctors have been informed that they must be mindful about whom they are prescribing the drugs to, and they must be prescribed sparingly.
However, many patients who have been using these cox-2 drugs for some time, and rely on them to relieve pain, have stated that they would rather risk the effects of taking the drugs – no matter how deadly – than be left in excruciating levels of pain. "People with arthritis will take anything and everything if it is going to alleviate the pain," said a San Marcos resident who took Celebrex. Another user stated: "It's a quality-of-life issue. I may be taking 10 years off my life by taking these drugs. But at least I have a better quality of life for the time I have left."
Doctors have varying opinions on the use of these cox-2 inhibitors. One cardiologist stated: "The FDA made a huge mistake to approve the drugs without specific studies of the cardiac risk. Pain control should never be a life-and-death issue. These drugs for pain are putting patients at risk for death from a heart attack or stroke."
However, another doctor, a rheumatologist, states: "Any doctor prescribing Vioxx is going to already know about the health risks. The risk has been completely overblown. The press has scared the bejesus out of people by magnifying the risk. It is a very, very small potential for risk."
