A recent study has indicated that patients that are taking the cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, could be twice as likely to have a heart attack than those taking some other pain relieving treatments. The study was released by the Medical Research Institute in New Zealand. The drug belongs to the same group as controversial painkillers Bextra and Vioxx.
Six studies involving nearly 13,000 patients were reviewed as part of the research, and this was to determine whether the heightened risks of heart attacks present with Vioxx were also present with Celebrex. The study revleaed that those taking the medication were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack than those taking alternative medication.
One researcher stated that the safety of the drug urgently needed to be re-assessed due to the fact that the drug is popular and commonly prescribed. However, a spokesperson for Pfizer New Zealand said that the findings were misleading because only a small proportion of studies had been evaluated as part of the research.
The spokesperson stated: “We very much dispute and are concerned with the nature of these findings. It is concerning for people who have been through a lot of uncertainty on the use of this medication and have been reassured.”
