In the latest courtroom fight against drug manufacturing giant Merck over its controversial painkiller Vioxx, lawyers for plaintiffs have claimed that the drug company purposely hid the dangers of the cox-2 inhibitor from consumers. The trial is taking place in a New Jersey courtroom, and the two plaintiffs involved claim that their heart attacks stemmed from taking Vioxx.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs stated that Merck had been far too concerned with marketing the drug rather than being worried about medical complications that could arise, and one of the lawyers described the drug as a walking time bomb for those susceptible to heart problems.
One lawyer stated: We have a right to know about the risks. Doesnt matter if it affects sales, doesnt matter if it affects budget, doesnt matter if it affects profit. The other lawyer involved stated that his client, 77-year-old Mr. McDarby, would never have taken Vioxx for his arthritis pain had he been made aware of the medical dangers and risks relating to heart attacks.
Merck has already been at the center of a number of trials, a couple of which it has won and others lost. Thousands of other lawsuits have been filed against the company after it was revealed in 2004 that the drug Vioxx increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
