Although the FDA advisory panel has now approved the sale of three controversial cox-2m inhibitors, Bextra, Celebrex, and Vioxx, following three days of meetings, it has been revealed that before and during the meetings some cox-2 patients were urging officials to let them make their own minds up about whether or not to take the drug, despite potentially deadly side effects.
Some patients stated that they would be willing to sign any waiver and to assume all responsibility for any side effects caused by the drug. They told officials that they would rather live with a high risk of potentially deadly effects than live a reduced quality of life without the drugs. For some patients, the prospect of managing without these painkillers was catastrophic, and some were counting down the days to the end of their pills…and the end of their pain-free lives.
"I have 40 pills left, 40 days before my life and ability are severely altered," stated one patient. "I will assume all liability and sign any waiver. Please give me that option." Another cox-2 patient stated: "I’m concerned that you all will take away my ability to make a decision with my physician, my family and my friends. Please don’t take this medication that works so well for me. What matters is that I retain the right to make a decision with my doctor and my family to continue to take this medication even if there are risks. I’m willing for my quality of life to take those risks."
As things stand, these patients will no longer have to worry, as the advisory panel has suggested that Vioxx, Bextra, and Celebrex are allowed to be sold on the US market subject to strict restrictions regarding advertising and very clear obvious warnings, enabling doctors and patients to assess the dangers and make their own minds up.
