Studies have shown that the scandal and controversy over various cox-2 inhibitor painkillers last year has left the painkiller industry in something of a mess. Pharmaceutical giant, Merck, pulled its Vioxx cox-2 inhibitor from the market in September last year following indications that the drug was linked to heart problems and strokes.
Tests also showed that two other cox-2 inhibitors bextra and celebrex, manufactured by another pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, were also linked to potentially deadly side effects. Before these results, cox-2 inhibitors were very popular with patients and doctors, because they offered pain relief without affecting the stomach in the same way as regular NSAIDs.
However it has been revealed that by the end of 2004 there were 43 percent fewer prescriptions in circulation for cox-2 inhibitors than the same time the previous year. On the other hand, non-prescription painkiller sales rocketed, and doctors believe that patients are so confused over what painkillers they can and cant take that they are simply suffering the pain or opting for non-prescription drugs.
Dr. Michel Dubois, director of the New York University Pain Management Center stated: "Ive been in practice for 30 years and Ive never seen such a mess." He thinks that around forty percent of his patients have switched to alternative painkillers rather than cox-2 inhibitors, or have actually stopped taking any form of painkiller at all, preferring to suffer the pain rather than take a drug that could result in deadly or dangerous side effects.
