Neurontin

Manufactured and marketed by the drugs giant, Pfizer Corp, Neurontin was initially approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in 1994 as an add-on treatment for those suffering with epilepsy. Due to the drug’s popularity, combined with a widespread practise of off label use, Neurontin sales were soon clearing over one billion dollars each year. However, allegations were made that the level of ales was mostly due to the off label use, and that the manufacturer, Pfizer, was using a loophole to exploit the drug and expand its possible uses for off label sales.

In 2002 the New York Times ran an articles that claimed that Pfizer had promoted the use of Neurontin for nearly a dozen off-label uses. This was followed by an article that was posted by the Public Citizen watchdog group. Public Citizen branded the drug: "the most complete and well document case of off-label promotion to ever come into public view." The drug was being investigated by officials from 47 states for illegal marketing.

Pfizer eventually pled guilty to charges of illegal marketing, as they were promoting Neurontin for uses that had not been approved by the FDA. Some of the off label uses they had promoted included bipolar mental disorder, pain disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, attention deficit disorder, migraines, drug and alcohol withdrawal seizures, restless leg syndrome, and as sole treatment for epilepsy. The company was fined $240 million for illegal marketing.

Unsurprisingly, this had led to a mass influx of lawsuits against Pfizer. Many patients were prescribed this drug due to false information and misleading marketing by the manufacturer. A Neurontin class action is already being looked into, although the likelihood of individual cases seems more probable due to the sheer number of ailments that the drug falsely claimed to treat. With the vast majority of Neurontin sales coming from off label uses, the company made billions from this false marketing, putting patients at risk, deceiving the public, and breaking the law all at the same time.

Although Pfizer has now paid a multi-million dollar fine as part of their sentence for the illegal marketing of Neurontin, this may be a drop in the ocean compared to the number of lawsuits the manufacturer stands to face. Many people have suffered adverse reactions to this drug, which was prescribed to them on the basis of false information, and many of this people will waste no time in filing lawsuits against Pfizer and claiming compensation for pain, suffering, and associated medical expenses.
