Lotronex

Lotronex is a drug that was initially prescribed to females with irritable bower syndrome, and was initially approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in February 2000. However, even during pre-approval clinical trials problems and side effects had been experienced by some of the patients trying this treatment. Cases of ischemic colitis had been reported already – a potentially deadly bowel disorder. This was followed by further reports of severe constipation that sometimes resulted in hospital stays and even surgery.

This led to an FDA warning, and the labelling for Lotronex was updated following the receipt of these adverse reaction complaints. This warned patients and medics of the possible side effects of Lotronex. The manufacturer of the drug was also ordered to issue medication guides to patients, which were designed to increase awareness about the drug in general as well as about the possible side effects of taking Lotronex.

Although threes warnings were added and medication guides had been issues by the manufacturer of Lotronex, the adverse effect reports continued to come in. As a result of this, just nine months following initial approval, Lotronex was recalled from the US market. A number of class action lawsuits followed due to the harm and injury some patients had suffered as a result of taking Lotronex.

Despite the problems and lawsuits that occurred the first time around, in 2002 Lotronex was approved again, this time for more restricted prescription for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) specialists. Although prescribing guidelines were issued, and the drug is only supposed to be prescribed by specialists in the field of IBS, there problems quickly began to reoccur. Public Citizen went before the FDA in 2002 to state that reintroducing this drug was a "serious public health mistake".

If you are taking or have ever taken Lotronex and have suffered ill effects from this medication, it is important to seek both medical and legal help. The side effects of Lotronex can be deadly, and your doctor may be able to recommend a suitable alternative. If you have already suffered or are suffering any side effects caused by this drug, you may have the right to claim compensation, which can help to cover any medical expenses as well as any pain and suffering caused by taking Lotronex.

Many lawyers now specialise in taking on Lotronex lawsuits and other drug litigation claims, and wherever possible it is best to seek assistance from an experienced Lotronex lawyer, as this can help to increase your chances of getting compensation for any problem experienced due to Lotronex. A lawyer that has dealt with Lotronex lawsuits in the past will have the knowledge and expertise required to oversee your claim and put together as watertight a case as possible.

You can discuss your case with a qualified lawyer for free in most cases, as many drug litigation lawyers do not charge for the initial consultation. This will enable you to get an idea of whether you have grounds to claim against the drug’s manufacturer, and what the best course of legal action may be for your individual needs. You may be advised to file a class action lawsuit or your lawyer may recommend and individual claim. Either way, you can be confident that you are getting the best advice from a trained and experienced Lotronex lawyer.

You will need to issue your lawyer with all the relevant details with regards to the side effects suffered from taking Lotronex, as the more information your lawyer has the better a case he can put together. Your lawyer will be able to advise you of your chances of success at your initial consultation, so you can find out right away whether you are eligible to claim for compensation for harm or injury caused by Lotronex.
