Lamictal

Lamictal is a drug that is prescribed for seizures and epilepsy, and is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline. The side effects linked to this drug resulted in a boxed warning on the labelling in 1997, which warned about some of the possible side effects of taking the drug. These side effects included: a possibly deadly rash, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis. The warnings on the revised labels also went on to warn that the drug was unsuitable for patients under the age of sixteen. Over half a million people were already using Lamictal by the time the labelling was revises with these warnings.

GlaxoSmithKline made another labelling change in 2003, which indicated Lamictal in patients that were as young as two years of age. However, effectiveness and safety issues for patients under sixteen years had not yet been established, except in cases of partial seizures and LGS. In the same year, Lamictal was approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder, normally treated with lithium.

In short, the effects of Lamictal can be deadly, and the potentially fatal side effects have resulted in these increased warning of Lamictal labelling and the prohibition of prescribing this drug to those under sixteen. Anyone that has suffered ill effect from taking Lamictal is advised to seek immediate medical attention as a precaution and with a view to changing to an alternative medication where applicable.

The other thing that those affected by the side effects of Lamictal are advised to do is seek legal assistance. The rising number of cases of those affected by this drug has seen an increase in the number of lawyers specializing in this type of drug litigation. You can now find specialist Lamictal lawyers that are fully aware of the implications and side effects of this drug, and have already established links with outside organizations and groups. This means that the lawyer can provide you with support as well as sound legal advice relating to your Lamictal lawsuit.

With many legal firms now employing specialist Lamictal and drug litigation lawyers, you should be able to find a local lawyer that can take on your Lamictal case. As many law firms offer a free initial consultation, it will cost you nothing to find out whether you have a potential lawsuit or claim on your hands, and you can discuss the details of your case with the lawyer, who can then discuss your legal options with you.

An experienced and skill drugs litigation lawyer will be able to offer advice on your best course of action based upon your personal circumstances and the strength of your case. He or she may recommend a class action lawsuit, which can increase your chances of success and can cost less in fees. If you have a strong case and the lawyer feels that you have a pretty watertight lawsuit he may recommend an individual lawsuit, which means that you are likely to get more in the way of compensation.

The compensation that you could get from a Lamictal lawsuit would be to cover any medical expenses incurred as a result of taking Lamictal. The settlement from your Lamictal lawsuit will also cover pain and suffering caused by Lamictal. If you are the relative of someone that has passed away and whose death has been linked to Lamictal, you can also seek legal advice with a view to filing for compensation. However, it is important to bear in mind that each state has a statute of limitation, which means that you must take action within a certain time frame. You should check on the statute of limitation within your state, and ensure that you contact a lawyer as soon as possible.
