Baycol

Generically known as cerivastatin, Baycol is a drug that was commonly prescribed to patients with high cholesterol. One of a group of drugs known as ‘statins’ Baycol worked by blocking one of the body’s enzymes – an enzyme that played a role in the build-up of cholesterol. Manufactured by the drug giants Bayer Pharmaceutical, Baycol received initial approval from the Food and Drugs Administration in 1997. However, the problems and fatalities associated with the drug resulted in its withdrawal just four years after FDA approval.

Related Health Problems Caused By The Drug:

The main effects associated with Baycol were kidney trouble, and more notably a potentially fatal disease known as rhabdomyolysis. This is a disease that breaks down muscles within the body, and ‘leaks’ muscle cells into the blood stream. This can then lead to organ and renal failure, which results in death. Some of the symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:

Following extreme concerns about the effects and potentially fatal dangers of the drug, Baycol was voluntarily withdrawn from the US market in August 2001 by the manufacturer, Bayer. The drug has been linked to over fifty deaths in the Unites States, as well as many cases of kidney and muscle disorder. The FDA issues a warning about the drug at the time of its withdrawal, informing patients and the rest of the general public about the potentially fatal and harmful effects of Baycol. However, for many it was already too late.

Patients that had been taking Baycol were advised to cease treatment immediately and see their doctor about getting an alternative treatment. Those that had experienced any side effects from taking Baycol were advised to seek legal assistance with a view to making a compensation claim against Bayer. This compensation was to cover medical costs incurred due to the ill heath caused by the drug, and also to provide compensation for pain and suffering by the patient.

There are now specialist drug litigation lawyers available to deal with Baycol cases and similar lawsuits. A Baycol lawyer will have researched this drug thoroughly, and will be familiar with the harmful effects, potential dangers, and the implication of long term use. A Baycol lawyer will also have links to other groups that can offer support and advice. Anyone looking to seek compensation for harm or injury brought on by Baycol use – or the relations of those that passed away due to problems caused by Baycol – can receive specialist, one to one advice from a fully trained and experienced Baycol lawyer.

A Baycol lawyer can evaluate your circumstances and advise whether you can file a claim against the manufacturers of Baycol. With the legal expertise available from a Baycol lawyer, you can put forward a good case with a view to making a compensation claim. A Baycol lawyer will have the skills and the know-how to put together as watertight a case as possible, and will be able to advise you on whether your case is likely to prove successful.

You can also discuss your legal options with a specialist Baycol lawyer, who can draw upon past experience and his or her knowledge of drug litigation in order to help you decide upon the best course of action. If your case is strong, your Baycol lawyer may advise you to opt for an individual compensation claim. However, if the lawyer has any doubts, he may suggest that you opt for a class action lawsuit, which offers less compensation as there are more people claiming as part of the suit, but increases the chances of success.
