Avandia

Approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in 1999, Avandia is prescribed in conjunction with a diet and exercise plan to reduce blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. Since millions of Americans suffer with this type of diabetes, Avandia became popular very quickly, despite the fact that it was shrouded in controversy shortly after receiving FDA approval.

Related Health Problems Caused By The Drug:

Earlier side effects of the drug included weight gain, which in a type diabetic could mean additional problems. However, other side effect of Avandia soon became apparent. These included liver problems, cardiovascular problems, anaemia, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, and respiratory problems. The effects became such a concern that just a year after approval the Food and Drugs Administration was petitioned with a demand to revise the product labelling of Avandia due to the lack of information and warning relating to side effects.

It is thought that the full extent of Avandia’s side effects may not yet be know, and to its credit the manufacturer of this drug, GlaxoSmithKline, is investing $300 million into further research on GlaxoSmithKline. However, this may not only confirm suspicions about the side effects already mentioned, but could also highlight side effects and health problems that have no yet been attributed to this drug.

One of the most serious issues that has been connected to Avandia so far is PPH ( primary pulmonary hypertension). This is a disease that causes the blood vessels in the lungs to narrow, which is turn can lead to high blood pressure, and eventually to heart failure. Although there is short term treatment available for this disorder, there is no cure; therefore, anyone that has been taking Avandia and has contracted this disorder yields little hope of long term recovery. Diagnosing and identifying PPH is not always easy, but some of the signs to look out for include:

As with other controversial and potentially harmful drugs, there are now lawyers that specialize in taking on Avandia lawsuits and compensation claims. These Avandia lawyers have the specialist training and skills, and can therefore better advise those affected by Avandia on the best course of action to take. An Avandia will have established links with other groups and organization, and can therefore provide both support and legal assistance to those looking to claim compensation for harm or injury caused by taking Avandia.

Your Avandia lawyer can offer advice on the likely success of your case, depending on your circumstances, and may be able to indicate what sort of settlement figure you could be looking at. Your lawyer can also maximize the chances of a successful claim, as he or she will know what sort of legal pitfall to look out for in drug litigation. You may be thinking of filing a class action lawsuit with other Avandia sufferers, as this would cost less in court costs and administration and can increase the chances of success. However, a class action suit can also result in lower levels of compensation for each of the claimants involved. Your Avandia lawyer can offer sound advice with regards to whether you should opt for a class action suit to increase your chances of success, or whether your case is strong enough to stand alone.

As many lawyers now offer a free initial consultation for Avandia claimants you can get your initial advice for free. This will enable you to determine whether it is worth pursuing your claim against the manufacturer of Avandia, and what your chances of success are. You can also ask your Avandia lawyer any questions you have about the legalities of drug litigation so that you can make a more informed decision with regards to whether to file a claim and which course of action to take.
